Electrolysis is a form of permanent hair removal that uses an electric current to damage the area in which your hair grows. A tiny microprobe is carefully inserted into each individual hair follicle to destroy the root, and then pulled out with a tweezer. Because all hair is not at the same stage of growth at any given time, multiple sessions are often needed. Sessions range from 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR ELECTROLYSIS?
The best candidates for electrolysis are those looking to achieve permanent hair removal in a small to medium area, and often those who are not a candidate for laser hair removal. If you are looking to treat light, blonde, grey or white hairs, electrolysis is the best option, as laser will only treat dark hair. Electrolysis is most popular with those looking to treat facial hair such as the upper lip, cheeks and chin.
HOW MANY VISITS ARE NEEDED?
It is common to book in for your appointment weekly, and gradually move to biweekly as hair growth lessens. Expect up to 20% regrowth from each treatment, which will happen within 4 to 6 weeks.
ELECTROLYSIS VS LASER
Electrolysis is different from laser in that it can treat white, gray or blonde hairs whereas laser cannot. If it is a large area of dark hair, laser is often a better option. Electrolysis is best for smaller areas and/or areas with lighter hair.
Electrolysis is only mildly discomforting, with the main side effect being slight redness and/or tenderness on the area treated. This can be easily covered with makeup, and goes down typically within 12-48 hours.
